Banks Off Campus National Day of Action
On March 20th, 14 campuses took action in solidarity with Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en land defenders, demanding banks stop funding climate chaos
From coast to coast, they took action against Canadian Banks for their continued investment in fossil fuels and projects that violate indigenous sovereignty. Students hosted teach-ins, screened the Yintah documentary, dropped flyers, canvassed their peers, organized rallies and marches, and dropped banners calling out Canada’s banks for their complicity in the climate crisis. In particular, students focused their attention on the LNG boom in so-called BC, and three key projects in the region: Prince Rupert Gas Transmission, KSI LSIMS, and Coastal GasLink Phase 2.
There are three proposed LNG projects in so called BC, which, if approved, would represent a “ carbon bomb” that would threaten salmon bearing streams, old-growth Forest, and indigenous ways of life.
The Prince Rupert Gas transmission ( PRGT) pipeline threatens Gitxan and Gitanyow territory without consent.
This project will lead to the proposed Ksi Lsims terminal relying on an expired environmental assessment and no funders. Meanwhile, banks double down on CGL, Phase 2, ignoring a decade of Wet’suwet’en resistance.
We know that RBC, TD, BMO, CIBC, and Scotiabank have an egregious track record when it comes to funding climate chaos. By targeting them before these projects reach final investment, we can stop them before they have a chance to begin rallies to banner drops, flyering, and postering, students are making their voices heard!
We demand that Canada’s Big 5 banks
- Cancel financing for the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline, KSI Lisims, and Coastal Gaslink Phase 2
- Commit to not financing future fossil fuel and LNG projects
- Respect the free, prior, and informed consent of indigenous people in all financing decisions
